Airside

This talk was given by James Greenfield, the creative director of Airside. What I think I got out of this lecture was the knowledge that I am not studying to be given a title, like a copy writer. It showed me that I can do a lot rather than just be a designer. James broke it down into 6 aspects:

- Strategy
- Brief
- Content
- UX
- Design
- Production

He explained that we can do all of this being a creative. On a personal level this makes my design world much more exciting, knowing i’m not limited to say advertising. We have to be a lot more flexible because thats what clients want nowadays.

The actual work was very moving image and digitally based. Looking at the work inspired me to think about the narrative within my projects such as ad campaigns or visual identities. This is also beneficial because narrative is the theme for one of my project briefs.

Overall the talk was inspiring and insightful, however I didn’t connect with some of the work. This was just because most of the pieces involved a lot of illustration and I don’t get the same vibe with that as I do with shapes and type. However it is very much a personal thing.

A TEXT POST

Sony Music

This was a lecture at NUCA on the 6th Oct given by the guys from Foam Agency, Phil Clandillon and Steve Milbourne.

I was already pretty excited about this one, having had a huge break from the design community I was ready to get back in action. Before the talk I was told that these guys did music videos for people like AC/DC and Franz Ferdinand. So not that bad!

However, they were kinda music videos and such but they were taking them a lot further exploring all sorts of mediums. Music videos that were were rendered in EXCEL! Excel thats for numbers right?! What they did was use excels coding to rasterise the images from different coding symbols. Immediately I thought this was going to be different.

The stand out phrase/analogy/cliche that they used was, “Don’t think outside the box, think inside the right one.” I really connected with this and I feel it’s true because design in itself is a discipline. Yes looking outside the box is a good thing to do but if you’re solving a problem then doing that is too expansive.

Other mediums that they used were Spotify, Youtube and Film. these are very internet driven and I feel that is the way forward. Another phrase was “what’s the headline?” If you’re not doing something to create a buzz what’s the point in doing it at all!

After we were allowed to stay behind and have like a small interview with them. Only a few stayed which was good. I wanted to ask the question “Are you working with any new media that we might not know of yet?” However a similar question was asked earlier, and was shot down by Steve. So, glad I didn’t say it now.

All in all a very good lecture/talk. Apparently they have an intern plan which lasts about 8 months. Looks like i’ve got something to aim for now!
